The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage origins go back to the 1700's with a Swedish man named Per Henrik Ling.
The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.
It is totally non invasive and safe, a medical questionnaire is taken prior to treatment on the first session, and you are asked if there are any changes at subsequent treatments.
Remedial massage is a system of manipulation of the soft tissues of the body with the hands. For thousands of years it was the principal method of treating musculoskeletal problems. It produces both physical and psychological benefits. It can be used as an injury preventative technique as well as a treatment for injury. Remedial massage works on many different levels and it is the unique way in which it combines the various benefits to suit the individual that makes it such a versatile and effective treatment method. The process of remedial massage is deeper than Swedish massage.
Many people today suffer with back, neck and shoulder pain causing many problems within the body. This may be a result of physical injury, bad posture or tension, causing muscles to be in a contracted state for long periods. Both mental and physical stress induces muscle tensions, which in turn produces pain, and so stress is increased. Remedial massage breaks this cycle. A remedial massage not only releases muscle spasms and reintroduces the correct muscle tone, but also releases endorphins (the body's natural pain killers which have a similar chemical structure to morphine) into the client's system. In addition to their analgesic effect, endorphins are thought to be involved in controlling the body's response to stress and determining mood.
